Combined Wax Carving & Sand Casting Jewelry Workshop
Want to walk away with your finished silver jewelry the same day? Sand Casting Technique is the perfect choice for you.
How it Works:
✔️ Design in Wax: You will first design and carve your unique piece in wax.
✔️ Direct Sand Casting: For designs suitable for the Sand Casting technique, we will guide you through the exciting process of casting your design directly into sterling silver.
✔️ Final Polish: The sand casting method allows for a quick turnaround. After casting, you will spend up to one hour on the post-casting cleanup process. This includes essential steps like sanding, buffing, oxidizing (blackening), and polishing to bring out the shine. Our instructors will assist you throughout this final step.
You don’t need experience: just patience, curiosity, and a little spark of creativity.
Is Sand Casting Right for Your Design?
While sand casting delivers instant results, it works best for some specific styles only. Please keep these Sand Casting limitations and considerations in mind:
Ideal Designs:
Sand casting excels at creating solid, bold jewelry designs, particularly signet rings and free-form, solid rings. We have successful design examples at the studio that you can reference or choose from.
Unique Capabilities
Sand casting works best when you allow for its unique capabilities. We’ll guide you to ensure your design is suitable, so you can leave with a finished piece!
Casting Stones:
You can cast stones in place (limit of 1-2 stones from our studio selection). Key Consideration: The stone may slightly shift during the casting process. If you enjoy and prefer the spontaneous, perfectly imperfect look of a truly handcrafted piece, this is a fantastic option to explore.
Make It Truly Yours
You’re the designer here! You can choose to:
- Engrave It:
Carve names, initials, or tiny details directly in wax before casting; your personal touch made permanent in silver. - Add Texture:
Use wax tools to experiment with different surface patterns: smooth, wavy, organic, geometric (…) possibilities are endless. - Build It Up:
Combine wax pieces or layer shapes to create unique structures like domes, patterns, or sculptural elements. - Make a Signet:
Shape your own bold signet ring base (Sqare, circle, rectangle, etc.) perfect for engraving later or leaving minimal for a classic look. - Set a Stone:
Embed a heat-resistant stone directly into the sand mold, or let us set it after casting for that final sparkle. - Upgrade to Investment Casting:
Want maximum precision? Choose this method for ultra-detailed results. (Takes a few days for full casting and finishing.) - Plate It:
Elevate your design with gold, rose gold, or white gold plating. (Extra service, 2–3 days for completion.)
Every creation is one of a kind, and our expert instructors will guide you through each step, ensuring your design is both technically sound and beautifully crafted.

Wax Carving & Casting Workshop Highlights
Important Considerations & Workshop Cautions
We want you to have a successful and enjoyable experience at our beginner wax carving workshop!
To ensure your carved piece can be successfully cast in silver, please keep the following limitations and expectations in mind:
Design Limitations for Beginners
Our workshop is designed to teach basic wax carving techniques suitable for beginners. To maximize your success, there are limitations on the complexity of the designs you can create:
-
Keep it Simple:
Please come ready to focus on the fundamental skills taught in the class. Avoid bringing overly complex or intricate ideas found on platforms like Pinterest. These advanced designs often require techniques not covered in a beginner session and may not be suitable for the casting process. If you have a preferred design, please message us to discuss in advance before attending the workshop so we can best advise you with the possibility.
-
Focus on Foundational Forms:
We recommend designs like simple bands, signet rings, textured pieces, or geometric pendants. Your instructor will guide you toward a design that is achievable in the time frame and suitable for sterling silver casting.
Casting Process and Timeline
Once your wax piece is complete, it must be cast into metal. The timeline depends on the casting method required:
-
Lost-Wax Casting (For Complex Designs):
If your design requires the professional lost-wax casting technique (the standard for intricate pieces), the process is handled by our expert casters.
-
Timeline:
Please allow 7–10 days for your final piece to be cast, cleaned, and professionally polished by our studio experts.
-
Attention: Casting Risk Notification
We pride ourselves on the quality of our casting process, but we must inform you of a rare, inherent risk associated with jewelry casting:
-
Risk of Loss:
There is a minimal 0.5% chance that an accident or force majeure can occur during the high-heat casting process. This is extremely rare, but in the unlikely event it happens, the original wax carving can be lost forever.
-
Our Guarantee:
Should this unfortunate event occur, we will offer you a complimentary spot to attend another workshop session to remake your piece free of charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can beginners join this workshop?
Absolutely!
This workshop is designed for complete beginners. Our instructors guide you through each step — from carving and shaping wax to sand-casting your finished piece in real silver. You’ll learn safely, confidently, and have fun doing it.
2. What kind of jewelry can I make?
You can make only one piece (or pair of earrings) per workshop.
We’ll help you design something achievable within the 3- to 4-hour class. Popular beginner choices include free-form signet rings and simple textured bands.
3. How many people can join?
Each session is private and limited to 3–4 participants, so everyone receives personal attention and time to work at their own pace.
4. What is the difference between wax carving and sand casting?
Wax carving teaches you how to sculpt your design in wax.
Sand casting is the exciting part where your wax model is used to create a mold and molten silver is poured to form your final piece.
You’ll get to do both during the session.
5. What’s the difference between sand casting and investment casting?
Sand casting allows you to take your finished silver piece home the same day.
Investment casting, on the other hand, takes several days, requires an extra fee and produces ultra-detailed results — ideal for precise or delicate designs. (Your wax model is melted out during this process.)
6. Can I add my gemstones?
Yes, you can. But it depends on your stone type, the casting method, and the setting style you want.
Some durable gemstones like sapphires, rubies, spinels, and certain quartz types can handle the extreme heat of sand casting, so they can be placed directly in your mold before pouring molten silver.
More delicate gems, such as emeralds, amethysts, opals, or pearls: should be set afterward using methods like bezel, prong, or flush setting, once the metal has cooled and been finished.
💡 Tip: Please send us a photo of the stone you will like to use. We’ll help you choose the best setting and casting method to keep your gem safe and looking stunning.
7. What happens if my investment casting doesn’t turn out right?
Casting is a real craft. Sometimes the mold or flow may fail. If that happens, we’ll guide you through carving again and adjusting your design so it comes out even better on your second try.
It’s all part of the learning process!
8. Do I get to keep my wax model?
It depends on your preferred casting method!
If you’re doing sand casting, your wax model stays intact, so you can keep it as a keepsake or reuse it later.
However, in investment casting, the wax melts away during the casting process to create the mold for your silver piece; meaning the original wax model is lost.
💡 Please note: Investment casting is a more delicate process and, while rare, sometimes the mold doesn’t come out perfectly. In that case, we may need to re-carve or adjust your design before casting again. Our team will guide you through it if it happens!
9. How much silver is included?
Silver is charged separately at 450,000 VND per 3.75 grams of 940 sterling silver, which includes professional casting and finishing.
We weigh your wax model to estimate the cost before casting.
10. Can I engrave my design?
You can engrave or carve directly on your wax model, or after casting and finishing, we can laser engrave it.
11. How long does the workshop last?
The session lasts around 3–4 hours, depending on your pace and design.
- Sand Casting: same-day results.
- Investment Casting: 7–10 days for completion, polishing, and pickup.
12. Is sand casting right for my design?
Sand casting is ideal for bold, solid forms like signet rings, chunky bands, or free-form organic shapes. It’s not suitable for thin or highly detailed designs. If your wax design fits this method, you’ll get to cast your piece directly in silver and take it home the same day.
13. What are the limitations of sand casting?
Because sand molds can’t capture ultra-fine details, some designs will need to be cast using lost-wax (investment) casting instead. Your instructor will evaluate your piece and suggest the best method. Sand casting results are unique and slightly organic — part of their handcrafted charm.
14. What if I prefer a more precise, detailed result?
For designs requiring clean lines or intricate patterns, we recommend investment casting. This process takes 7–10 days and produces a highly detailed result through professional casting and polishing.
Please note: your wax model will melt away during this process
15. Is it possible to gift this workshop or make a keepsake?
Absolutely.
Many participants create pieces as gifts, souvenirs, or couple’s keepsakes.
